But swinging is still looked down upon by many members of our society. Indeed, it\u2019s often seen as taboo and has a huge stigma attached to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, many of my close friends and relatives don\u2019t know that I swing. The reason I haven\u2019t told them is that I know they\u2019re not super open to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>But how common is swinging really? <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is it more popular than many of us think? <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Or is it super underground?&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In this article, we are going to take a look at how popular swinging is, and we are going to share with you some statistics that may surprise you.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Brief History of Swinging&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Swinging is nothing new. In actual fact, it\u2019s probably been around for thousands of years!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yep, our ancient ancestors were&nbsp;<em>very<\/em>&nbsp;sexually aware and there was a time when there was no such thing as marriage. Instead, romantic Stone Age couples would practice what\u2019s known as \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/psychology.wikia.org\/wiki\/Polyandry\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"formal polyandry (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" class=\"rank-math-link\">formal polyandry<\/a>\u2019 &#8211; and it wasn\u2019t even frowned upon.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fast forward to more modern times and it\u2019s a bit harder to pin down the recent history of swinging, probably because it\u2019s always been so underground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, there are indications that modern-day swinging began around the 1940s when American Air Force fighter pilots participating in the second world war swapped spouses, either to keep morale up when one of the men was widowed or to create closer bonds.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the time the war was over and the swinging sixties had kicked in, the sexual revolution exploded &#8211; and so did swinging.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indeed, the free love movement of the 60s was when swinging became more acceptable to many. Sex parties were created, as were sex toys. Couples were encouraged to swap partners and fun new games were invented, such as the infamous Key Game.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Back then, however, swinging was mostly known as \u2018wife swapping. It was only in the seventies that the term \u2018swinging\u2019 became common.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the 70s were over, the swingers' lifestyle took a nose dive but emerged once more in the 1990s after the invention of the internet.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Top 10 Swinging Statistics<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>1. A 2017 survey in the United States found that 4.2% of adults had participated in some form of consensual non-monogamy in their lifetime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. A study in Canada found that 2.6% of participants reported having participated in swinging at some point in their lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3. A 2010 survey in Spain found that 3.3% of men and 1.3% of women reported having engaged in swinging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>4. A survey in the Netherlands found that 2.3% of the adult population reported having engaged in swinging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>5. A study in the United Kingdom found that 4.4% of the population had engaged in some form of non-monogamous behavior, including swinging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>6. A survey in Australia found that 2.2% of participants reported having ever engaged in swinging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>7. A study of adult website users in the United States found that 9.4% of men and 1.5% of women reported having engaged in swinging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>8. A survey of gay and bisexual men in the United States found that 5.1% reported having ever participated in swinging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>9. A study of college students in the United States found that 3.9% reported having engaged in swinging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>10. A survey of attendees at a swingers' convention in the United States found that 95% of participants were married or in a committed relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Many People Swing Today?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There hasn\u2019t been a great deal of research into how many people swing. The most recent estimate is a few years old, and it found that <strong>4% of Americans classify themselves as swingers<\/strong>.&nbsp;This means that <strong>about 15 million U.S. citizens are swingers<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s quite a high number (much higher than even I\u2019d anticipated!).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, a few years have passed since the original survey was carried out, and there\u2019s every reason to believe that there\u2019s been an increase in numbers since. After all, more and more people are becoming sexually liberated, and terms such as non-monogamy are entering the mainstream.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moreover, these numbers are only for the western world. When it comes to parts of the world like South America, it\u2019s a lot less clear how many swingers there are. One thing we do know is that some South American tribes practice what\u2019s called informal polyandry, which is when people in hunter-gatherer societies who are not married share their female partners.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is actually a common practice, and it involves inviting men into other men\u2019s houses so that they can sleep with their partners.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are also African tribes who practice this sort of thing. More a form of wife swapping than swinging, husbands will offer their wives to male visitors who can either accept or decline the offer. If, on the other hand, the male visitor arrives with his own wife, the two men can swap wives for the night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Again, this is a basic form of swapping that isn\u2019t anywhere near the likes you see advertised on websites and apps like Adult Friend Finder and Swingers Lifestyle.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Non-Monogamy\u00a0is On The Rise<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the reasons swinging has become so popular in the west is that the idea of non-monogamy is becoming increasingly entertained and accepted by couples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will, of course, often see non-monogamous couples on hookup sites like Adult Friend Finder. But they\u2019re also becoming much more common on traditional dating sites like OkCupid, with a 2016 study showing that<a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2019\/05\/27\/are-we-moving-towards-a-society-where-everyone-is-polyamorous-or-in-open-relationships-9635982\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" class=\"rank-math-link\">&nbsp;1 in 5 American adults<\/a>&nbsp;have been in a non-monogamous relationship at some point in their lives.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Otherwise known as open relationships, these types of relationships indicate that more and more of us are at least curious about exploring a different type of relationship and inviting others into it. This could, in turn, lead to swinging.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to the demographics, it\u2019s easy to picture swingers as being middle-class, middle-aged, and wealthy. The research does still back this image up, with over&nbsp;<strong>76% of polyamorists&nbsp;coming from a middle-class<\/strong> (or higher) background. Moreover, most western polyamorists are white.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, studies have also shown that around<a href=\"https:\/\/today.yougov.com\/topics\/lifestyle\/articles-reports\/2016\/10\/03\/young-americans-less-wedded-monogamy\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" class=\"rank-math-link\">&nbsp;50% of millennials<\/a>&nbsp;are now open to non-monogamy. Whilst this doesn\u2019t mean we can join the dots and state that the same number will be interested in swinging, the results are instructive nevertheless: Swinging is becoming more common and more accepted as the traditional picture of marriage and \u2018blissful domestic life\u2019 wanes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Further, while swinging used to be the indulgence of the middle class, middle-aged couples who had grown-up children, younger people without kids are now starting to swing. This represents a huge shift in relationship dynamics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s hard to measure how common swinging is because a lot of people aren\u2019t honest about their sex lives. It\u2019s a private, often touchy subject for some. Many newbie swingers, for example, might not be ready to openly admit what they\u2019ve been up to.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, as our general view of relationships changes, and as more people become open to non-monogamy, swinging should only grow in popularity.
